Welcome to my Blog!

Hi there, my names Julia Chiaramonte, and this blog is for my grade 11 English ISP.  I'm 16 years old and go to Bishop Allen Academy. This blog will focus on the most important theme throughout our course. The theme that I believe is the most evident is that love is good, and will be exploring this over the next month. Feel free to check out and comment on any of my posts!

What is Love?

Image
What is love? According to many of Shakespeare's plays, it's tragic. Throughout  A Midsummer Night's Dream , people fall in love, out of love, and are tricked into it. Although in the romance genre didn't necessarily exist in Shakespeare's time, nowadays  A Midsummer Night's Dream  can be classified as a romance, or a "tragi-comedy" (tragic comedy).  In  The Kite Runner  by Khaled Hosseini, love is a dominant force the causes many of the characters to act the way they do, although this theme may not be as prominent as other ones.  In this blog, I will be exploring the theme of love in throughout the units that we studied in this course. Many people may argue that love is bad, but the play ends with three marriages, and Amir ends up with a happy family. I believe that love is good, and helped the characters throughout their journeys. Therefore, this blog is going to be exploring how love positively impacts the characters. Lysander and Hermia

Letter to the Editor

Julia Chiaramonte Ye Letter to the Editor Dear Mr. Cavendish, In regard to thy latest comments concerning mine play, I am saddened to learn that thee didst not enjoy A Midsummer Night’s Dream . Audibly, an artless, fool-born lout like thee wouldst not understand such a performance. Now please, taketh the time to read what I has’t to say, and perhaps thee wilt understand mine work. The play within a play is showeth a contrast between Pyramus and Thisbe and the dramatic love story between the rest of the characters, and is still a tragical mirth. The play performed by the mechanics is not meant to offend anyone watching. T giveth a break from the drama befall, which is apart of mine creativity. Tis also necessary for a play as remarkable as this one. Someone like thee, who looks too deeply into things, would only believe that is offensive. The two stories art very similar to each other, therefore t doest not seem to difficult for the audience to understand. Both plays has&#

Types of Love in the Stories

Image
In both books that we studied in this course, the characters have all been affected by love. According to the Ancient Greeks, there are about eight different types of love: eros, philia, storge, ludus, mania, pragma, philautia, and agape. So, which of these types of love do we see throughout the course? A Midsummer Night's Dream: Eros: Passionate, desire, and lustful love. We see this love between Helena and Demetrius. Helena aspires to be with Demetrius, but he does not want her, only Hermia. Eventually, when Robin gives him the juice, he falls in love with her, which causes them to become inseparable. Helena and Hermia. Philia: Friendship love. This a love we see between Hermia and Helena. They grew up together, which makes it hard for them to disagree with eachother, " When we have chid the hasty-footed time f or parting us—oh, is it all forgot?  All schooldays' friendship, childhood innocence?"(Shakespeare 3.2.203-205). Unfortunately, Lysander and Demet

Memoir

Julia Chiaramonte Mr. Freitas ENG3U-13 07 July 2018 Memoir I knew something was not right between my parents for a while. They would constantly fight, most of the time it was over the smallest things. My brother and I hated it so much, but we never said anything, we just tried to ignore it. We hoped that it would eventually stop, which it did, but it felt like it was neverending at the time. There were so many signs that something like this would happen, but I was too young to notice them. Now, I see them clear as day. I was in my bedroom when my mom called me into the living room. I walked in and saw my brother sitting on the big armchair that was in the corner of the room. My dad was standing beside my mom, who was sitting on the futon in front of the chair. I had no idea what was happening, so I decided to sit beside my brother. My dad grabbed the remote and muted the TV, which he always does when he wants to say something important. I assumed my brother and I were in

Essay- Betrayal and Redemption

Julia Chiaramonte Mr. Freitas ENG3U1-13 23 July 2018 Betrayal and Redemption in The Kite Runner There are many evident themes throughout Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner that make the story powerful and meaningful. However, betrayal and redemption is the theme that impacts and influences the characters the most.  Amir puts other through pain so he can feel accepted, but it just leaves him feeling guilty. Baba keeps secrets from his family that end up hurting himself, and his loved ones. Sanaubar makes mistakes that seem like the right choice at the time, but she ends up regretting them. All of these characters make mistakes when they are young, and do not realize right from wrong. Eventually, they realize what they have done, and try everything to make it right. This plays a major part in the way that the decisions they make, and without these problems, there would be no plot to the story, therefore betrayal and redemption is the most important theme in this book. A Midsummer Night's Dream "Hippolyta, I woo'd thee with my sword and won thy love doing thee injuries, but I will wed thee in another key, with pomp, with triumph, and with reveling." (Shakespeare 1.1.17-20) -Theseus talking about how he and Hippolyta were 'forced' to marry, but their love is real. "I am, my lord, as well derived as he, a s well possessed. My love is more than his.  My fortunes every way as fairly ranked,  (if not with vantage) as Demetrius'.  And-which is more than all these boasts can be- I am beloved of beauteous Hermia" (1.1.99-104) -Lysander trying to get Egeus and Theseus to let him and Hermia marry. Hermia "Things base and vile, holding no quantity, l ove can transpose to form and dignity.  Love looks not with the eyes but with the mind.  And therefore is winged Cupid painted blind.  Nor hath Love’s mind of any judgment taste—w ings and no eyes figure unheedy haste.  And therefore is Love said to be a child

The Bad Aspects of Love

Image
The Kite Runner Unfortunately, love makes the characters in the Kite Runner do bad things. Amir's love for Baba makes him betray Hassans love for him. Amir believes that the only thing to gain acceptance from Baba is to win the kite tournament. When Hassan finds the kite , Assef and his crew has it. Assef allows Hassan to have it, but he rapes him first. Amir witnesses all of this, and he decides not to interfere because he is scared of what Assef might do to him, "I ran because I was a coward. I was afraid of Assef and what he would do to me" (Hosseini 65). Amir knew that he needed that kite deep down, which is also another reason why he ran away. He thought that his lvoe for Baba would be worth it, but in the end, it was not. Hassan's loyalty to Amir is what causes him to get hurt the most. He would do anything for Amir, even though he knows that Amir would not  do the same, "'If you asked I would,' he finally said, looking right at me. I dropp

The Good Aspects of Love

Image
The Kite Runner Although the influence of love in The Kite Runner causes the characters to do some bad things, there a good acts that they do. Hasssan is an innocent and devoted boy, and most of his actions are shaped by love. He is a very humble boy who does not need much to make him happy, but would give anything and everything he has to make someone else feel better. He was raised very well by Ali, and Hassan is a very polite and kind boy, "I talked Hassan into firing walnuts with his slingshot at the neighbor's one-eyed German shepherd. Hassan never wanted to, but if I asked, really asked, he wouldn't deny me. Hassan never denied me anything." (Hoesseini 3). He wanted Amir to be happy, so he complied with what he told him to do, even if he didn't like it, but he would sometimes still have fun. Amir had a hard time truly understanding love growing up. He saw it as a power you hold over someone- in his case, Hassan. But, as he got older, he realized what lo

A Midsummer Night's Dream- Summary

Image
This is my summary of William Shakespeare's  A Midsummer Night's Dream,  for those who have not yet read the play. A Midsummer Night's Dream  takes place in Athen's. The duke of Athens, Theseus, and the Queen of the Amazons, Hippolyta, are getting married in a few days. The whole region is excited and preparing for the wedding. Egeus, a nobleman, enters the room with his daughter, Hermia, Lysander, her lover, and Demetrius. Egeus is upset that Hermia refuses to marry Demetrius, despite her father's request. In their time, the daughter had to follow her father's orders. Theseus says that Hermia has to marry Demetrius, or become a nun. Lysander tries to convince Theseus to let him marry her, but it does not work. They all leave, and Lysander and Hermia come up with a plan to run away to a nearby town, where they would be able to get married. They decide to tell Helena, Hermia's childhood friend about this as they are leaving. Instead of keeping it a secret,

The Kite Runner- Summary

Image
This is my summary for Khaled Hosseini's  The Kite Runner. The Kite Runner  by Khaled Hosseini is the story of an Afghanistan man named Amir, trying to make his mistakes right. The story starts in Kabul, when Amir is a child. He talks about his life growing up, and the problems that effected him throughout the rest of his life. Amir had a good life when he was a child. His father, or Baba, was a very successful and good businessman that many people thought highly of. His mother, Sofia, was a beautiful and smart woman, who unfortunately died during childbirth. Amir grew up with a distant relationship with Baba, because Baba wanted him to be a  'typical' boy who liked sports and hunting. Amir preferred reading and writing, which deep down, disappointed Baba, but Baba's close friend, Rahim Kahn, encourages him to continue what he loves. Baba took a liking to his adoptive brother's, Ali, son, Hassan. Ali and Hassan were Hazaras, and servants for Amir and Baba. Ali wa

Unit 4: The Novel

Image
The Kite Runner Family In this unit, we had a choice of two books: The Kite Runner or Three Day Road. We had to find a review on both books, and answer a few questions about it. Then, we got to choose which one we would like to study. The plot from the review I read about The Kite Runner seemed more interesting, so I chose The Kite Runner. Reading the book gave me a bunch of mixed emotions. There are so many scenes that cause you to feel exactly what the characters feel. I'm really happy that I chose to work on this book.  Let's Begin Reading the first 40 pages, I didn't really know what to expect. The friendship between Amir and Hassan was inspiring, but it started to strain when other people started talking. Amir's jealousy for the relationship that Baba and Hassan had was also taking a toll on their friendship. Rahim Khan also evidently played an important father figure to Amir, which was good considering Baba and him did not have a good relationship

Unit 2: Drama

Image
A Midsummer Night's Dream You Are The Director This assignment was very fun to do. We got a chance to critique and control how we would direct a play. None of us are experts at directing plays, but it was interesting to see how we would all want the players to act. A Midsummer's Night Dream is a play within a play, with the influence of love being one of the major themes. We also had to watch a video on 1.2 from the play, and critique it. The video that I watched was okay, but there were many things that I would change about it. I would want Bottom to be louder, and the actors in the back weren't doing to great. Chaos and Confusion In this assignment, we had to find quotes and relate them to our choice of imagery. This assignment was interesting to me because we got to see the metaphors and similes that Shakespeare uses. The use of imagery in his plays make it easier to understand and relate to the characters.  We had to read 3.2, which is when Oberon r
