The Bad Aspects of Love

The Kite Runner

Unfortunately, love makes the characters in the Kite Runner do bad things.

Amir's love for Baba makes him betray Hassans love for him. Amir believes that the only thing to gain acceptance from Baba is to win the kite tournament. When Hassan finds the kite , Assef and his crew has it. Assef allows Hassan to have it, but he rapes him first. Amir witnesses all of this, and he decides not to interfere because he is scared of what Assef might do to him, "I ran because I was a coward. I was afraid of Assef and what he would do to me" (Hosseini 65). Amir knew that he needed that kite deep down, which is also another reason why he ran away. He thought that his lvoe for Baba would be worth it, but in the end, it was not.

Hassan's loyalty to Amir is what causes him to get hurt the most. He would do anything for Amir, even though he knows that Amir would not  do the same, "'If you asked I would,' he finally said, looking right at me. I dropped my eyes. To this day, I find it hard to gaze directly at people like Hassan, people who mean every word they say" (44). Hassan wants Amir to be happy, because when Amir is happy, Hassan is also happy. No matter what the price is, Hassan will gladly pay if it means Amir will still be friends with him.

A Midsummer Night's Dream

Everyone knows that in almost all of Shakespeare's play, love is portrayed badly.

At the start of the play, Hermia is refusing to marry Demetrius. She knows deep down that she will not be happy, and that the love is not true, "So will I grow, so live, so die, my lord, ere I will yield my virgin patent up unto his lordship, whose unwishèd yoke my soul consents not to give sovereignty." (1.1.79-82). Hermia is desperate, and is willing to do anything to not marry Demetrius, even if it means having to never see Lysander again, and become a nun.

Hermia, Helena, Lysander and Demetrius caught up in lovers arguments.

Helena has a hard time with love, so she knows how bad it is. Helena knows love is not promising, and it can change at anytime, "
And therefore is Love said to be a child, because in choice he is so oft beguiled. As waggish boys in game themselves forswear, so the boy Love is perjured everywhere." (1.1.238-241). This play contains the most unpredictable loves, which choose to change their courses at any given time. Helena is foreshadowing the difficult love triangles that are to come in the play.
