The Good Aspects of Love

The Kite Runner

Although the influence of love in The Kite Runner causes the characters to do some bad things, there a good acts that they do.

Hasssan is an innocent and devoted boy, and most of his actions are shaped by love. He is a very humble boy who does not need much to make him happy, but would give anything and everything he has to make someone else feel better. He was raised very well by Ali, and Hassan is a very polite and kind boy, "I talked Hassan into firing walnuts with his slingshot at the neighbor's one-eyed German shepherd. Hassan never wanted to, but if I asked, really asked, he wouldn't deny me. Hassan never denied me anything." (Hoesseini 3). He wanted Amir to be happy, so he complied with what he told him to do, even if he didn't like it, but he would sometimes still have fun.

But, as he got older, he realized what love truly is, which is wanting someone to be happy and safe. He starts to realize this when Rahim Khan asked him to go save Sohrab, Hassan's son. Amir wants Sohrab to be safe with him, and his heroic actions are influenced by his love for Sohrab and Hassan, "'Would you like to come live in America with me and my wife?' He didn't answer. He sobbed into my shirt and I let him." (278). He wants Sohrab to have a good life, so he will do anything to make sure he gets it.

Baba has a very hard time showing his love for Amir, but it doesn't mean that he isn't proud of him. Amir isn't the ideal son that he wanted, and that does not change how he loves him. He loves Amir, and the way he shows it is through small things, "I looked from him to the car. 'You'll need it to
go to college,' he said. I took his hand in mine. Squeezed it. My eyes were tearing over and I was  glad for the shadows that hid our faces. 'Thank you, Baba'" (111). Baba and Amir have a strained relationship, but Baba does stuff to reassure that he loves Amir.

A Midsummer Night's Dream

Love is the most powerful source in A Midsummer Night's Dream. It leads the characters into doing good and bad things, to get what they want.

Lysander with Helena and Hermia.
For Helena, love is difficult. But, the juice makes Lysander and Demetrius fall in love with her. They will do anything to protect her, even if it may hurt the feelings of Hermia, whom they both once loved. Hermia seems to be a threat to Helena, but Lysander knows better than to harm Hermia, which shows him that he still knows right from wrong, "What, should I hurt her, strike her, kill her dead? Although I hate her, I’ll not harm her so." (3.2.275-276).

Hippolyta and Theseus seem to be the only couple in the play who's love is safe. "Hippolyta, I wooed thee with my sword and won thy love doing thee injuries. But I will wed thee in another key,
with pomp, with triumph, and with reveling." (1.1.16-19). They are truly in love, with out any spells, and they plan on living a good life together and ruling their lands peacefully.

Although it is not obvious, Quince does have a love for his fellow cast. As director, he has to make sure that they are fit for the roles. When he gives snug the role of the lion, Snug has his doubts, "Have you the lion’s part written? Pray you, if it be, give it me, for I am slow of study. You may do it extempore, for it is nothing but roaring." (1.2.28-30). Quince reassures him that the part is perfect and easy enough for him to do. He loves his friends, and wants the to be comfortable playing their parts, which is what he is doing with Snug.
